Interest for research grants keeps growing
BRUSSELS – 15 / 6 / 2010 UPDATE 17 / 6 / 2010 – At the deadline for applications to research grants for European journalistic research, 27 journalists or teams of journalists had applied. More than in any of the previous rounds.

Research grants seem to be a good tool: This weekend the Global Shining Light Award for investigative journalism was won by a Scoop supported team for the second time.
Call for proposals with new options
BRUSSELS – 17 / 4 / 2010 update 5 / 6 / 2010– Journalismfund.eu now can distribute another round of research grants. If journalists have a good idea for an investigative story but lack time or money to carry out the research, they can apply for funding. As a new option this call not only offers support for cross-border stories but also for European affairs stories.

Denmark considers funding for investigative journalism
BRUSSELS - 24 / 3 / 2010 - The governing Danish liberal party Venstre has suggested to grant five million Danish crowns or € 670.000 to a pilot project on support for investigative reporting.
New research grants for journalists in Africa
BRUSSELS – 28 / 1 / 2010 – Numerous African reporters have contacted Journalismfund.eu for funding. Now new research grants are made available for four Western African countries. Recent examples show, that African reporters very much are interested in the same subjects for cross-border research as European ones.

BRUSSELES - 12 / 11 / 2009 - Journalismfund.eu just has closed the 2nd round of applications for research stipendia. A first screening shows more applicants than in the first round and very targeted applications, most of them for clearly investigative stories.

BRUSSELS - 13 / 4 / 2009 - The German think tank Friedrich Ebert Stiftung has made an overview over support models for quality journalism. Journalismfund.eu is not among them yet - but both its models are mentioned.
Can a mix of philantropy and low-profit save newspapers?
BRUSSELS - 13 / 04 / 2009 - A new bill in the US state of Illinois may give new options ot save newspapers, Huffington Post writes. The law establishes a new company model, the low-profit limited liability company or L3C, which allows to combine philantropy and low-profit business.
Overwhelming interest for European research grants
BRUSSELS – 29/03/2009 – There is an overwhelming interest for research grants to do European journalism. 29 journalists in 18 teams applied for 145.000 Euro. The jury thus will have a number of interesting applications to choose among when it distributes the 20.000 Euro for the grants of the pilot phase.

BRUSSELS - 12/3/09 - A new investigative reporting programme is launched in the US - with alternative funding. The project is called "The Business of Bribes".
Research grant model wins another award
BRUSSELS – 10 / 3 / 2009 – Two Macedonien journalists supported with a work grant by the Danish Scoop project were awarded with a national journalism price. Surely the team is happy, but in itself not big news. Yet in the six-year story of the Scoop project, this is the 14th of national and international awards won by colleagues working on Scoop research grants.

BRUSSELS– 26 / 2 / 2009 – COMMENT - The Editors Weblog of the World Association of Newspapers has published an interview with Journalismfund.eu director Brigitte Alfter and concludes it’s article saying: “Hopefully they will succeed.”

Integrity award to investigative journalists
BRUSSELS - 20/2/2009 - Two investigative journalists have been awarded the Integrity Award by Transparency International. David Leigh from the Guardian in London and Roman Shleynov from Novaya Gazeta in Moscow are praised for their investigative reporting.
Non-profit journalism on the raise in the US
BRUSSELS - 10 / 7 / 2009 - Non-profit journalism is on the raise in the United States. Big time! Within a month Associated Press announced a new wire carrying only non-profit investigative stories, the Knight Foundation announced it's 15 million dollar support for investigative journalism, and now an investigative journalism network was established with the Pocantico Declaration.
Could a non-profit model save the newspaper industry?
BRUSSELS - 20/2/2009 - Could the non-profit model be the saviour the newspaper industry has been looking for? This question was prompted by a New York Times op-ed on 28 January, which proposed that America's "most valued sources of news" should become non-profit institutions funded by endowments. Animated responses to this article, both positive and negative, have appeared throughout the media since.

Reporting does make a difference
BRUSSELS 20/02/2009 - Independent news matter, writes Eduardo Porter in an editorial at the New York Times. "The argument that if newspapers go bust there will be nobody covering city hall is true. It’s also true that corruption will rise, legislation will more easily be captured by vested interests and voter turnout will fall," he argues.
New support for Journalismfund.eu
BRUSSELS – 7 / 9 / 09 – Journalismfund.eu has received €114.000 from the Open Society Institute. This will allow two new rounds of grants during the autumn and winter, and it will allow Journalismfund.eu to take crucial steps forward to establish itself as a strong organisation.
