BRUSSELS - A new year often makes for the perfect moment to glance back at past work. For Journalismfund.eu 2014 proved a year of consolidation and continued growth with a record amount of grant money allocated.

2014 was a particularly fruitful year for Journalismfund.eu and its grantees. There were two application rounds, one in March and one in September. A total amount of €63,195 was allocated in 2014, significantly more than in any previous year. The higher budget allowed for twelve grants to be allocated, the average number of grants given every year being seven. The largest grant allocated in 2014 was € 8,025.

156 journalists submitted 55 applications asking for € 479,697 in total, the highest amount we have been asked for since our launch in 2008. Of those 156 applying journalists, 76 were male and 80 female. Most applicants and grantees came from Italy (34 and 14), followed by Germany (16 and 4) and Romania (14 and 3).

Of the twelve projects that were allocated a grant in 2014, two have already been published:

  • The Belarus Networks, about the money-grabbing by the Belarussian elite surrounding president Lukashenko
  • Generation E, a crowdsourcing project that sheds light on the migration of southern Europeans within Europe

In 2015 no fewer than four application rounds are planned. The deadline of the first round is 26 January at 11.59 pm Brussels time.
