Journalismfund.eu vzw, based near Brussels (Zellik), is looking for a Finance Manager to provide critical support functions to a growing organisation at a time when it will be implementing an ambitious new strategy for the next three years. The Role

The Finance Manager is responsible for overseeing the office finances (accounting) and financial management and reporting. The person is expected to have relevant qualifications or equivalent experience.
Main function: Accountancy and managing the multi-donor budget of the organisation.
Reporting to: Managing Director
Type of contract: fulltime; one-year contract with option for renewal once funding is secured.
Location: Zellik, Belgium
Starting date: November/December 2016
Salary: Remuneration depends on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

Key Responsibilities: Finance

  • Process invoices, expenses and payments‬;
  • Ensure authorisation and support of all financial transactions is compliant with internal procedures and donor requirements‬;
  • Ensure the accuracy of bank balances through the performance of periodic reconciliations‬;
  • Compile the annual budget, and budgets for project proposals in collaboration with relevant staff;
  • Develop and maintain financial systems, processes and practices;
  • Formulating long-term financial plans;
  • Prepare monthly management reports, monitor budgets, cash flows, income;
  • Prepare the year-end statutory financial statements in cooperation with external accountants, and liaise with external auditors;
  • Ensure compliance with financial and other statutory rules and regulations, also through the timely submission of relevant reports.‬

Qualifications and skills

The ideal candidate will have relevant work experience in finance management, and be able to work autonomously. A strong capacity to track details is required, including the ability to prioritize work demands and tasks.

Requirements

  • Must be legally eligible to work in the EU or possess a work permit in Belgium
  • Finance/Accounting qualification or equivalent
  • A minimum of two years’ relevant professional experience
  • Fluency in English; Fluency in Dutch
  • Proficiency in the MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point)
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines and objectives in an autonomous manner.
  • Desire and commitment to work in a small team in a multi-cultural working environment
  • Commercially and financially astute; pragmatic business thinker and effective communicator
  • Experienced in developing and implementing effective financial systems.
  • A strong team worker, able to be persuasive with colleagues.

Desirable‬

  • Knowledge of relevant Belgian law (e.g. accounting, labour, company tax law)
  • Knowledge of Exact Online accounting software
  • Experience in financial management of project grants
  • Experience of working in an international non-profit organisation
