ASUNCIÓN – Following an environmental investigation, the Paraguayan Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MADES) issued an official response.
The Paraguayan Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MADES) has issued a statement refuting the findings of the cross-border investigation by Marta Saiz and Flavia Campeis, which linked the European car industry to large-scale deforestation in Paraguay's Chaco region.
In their response, MADES stated that although similar complaints had previously been made about the Paraguayan leather production industry, various competent authorities, including MADES itself, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MIC), the National Forestry Institute (INFONA), and the National Service for the Sanitary and Health Control of Livestock Products (SENACSA), had since taken action on the issue. They ensured that the production of cow leather in Paraguay complied with current environmental regulations, including respecting sustainable production processes and complying with national laws.
