The Investigative Media Lab ( hereinafter IML) was founded in September 2022 at the School of Social Sciences of the University of Georgia.

IML is the only entity across Georgia which is focused on promoting and developing investigative media teaching and production. The mission of IML is to foster a new generation of courageous, skilled, and ethical investigative journalists committed to safeguarding democracy, promoting transparency, and upholding the principles of the free press. To achieve its goal, IML trains a new generation of investigative journalists by offering them project-based courses and re-training the mid-career reporters.

IML believes in the power of journalism to inform, empower, and unite diverse communities, challenging the forces of disinformation and censorship that threaten democratic processes within the country and the whole society. By nurturing a dynamic and resilient community of investigative journalists, the IML aspires to drive positive changes, defend the public’s right to know and restore trust in the media while strengthening the resilience of our democratic institutions in the face of tough challenges.
