Through our newsletters, social media and the proposed magazine, we not only aim to inform but also instill a sense of community and shared purpose among our audience.
FLORENCE, ITALY — Magma addresses the lack of a broader regional perspective on the environmental and climate crises affecting Mediterranean countries. Through our newsletters, social media and the proposed magazine, we not only aim to inform but also instill a sense of community and shared purpose among our audience.
The Mediterranean faces interconnected environmental challenges, yet traditional media often treats them as isolated national issues. At the same time, those remote communities most impacted by these crises remain underrepresented in coverage, leaving critical perspectives untold.
Magma was founded with the vision of creating a digital magazine offering a regional perspective on shared environmental challenges and an end-of-year print edition collecting its best work. Over the past three years, limited funding has led us to focus primarily on newsletters while investing the occasional grants in experimenting new collaborations with other news organizations and journalists within the Mediterranean region — something we’d still love to keep doing.
Only recently, a grant from Journalismfund for the Magmatic School of Environmental Journalism has allowed us to work on three digital editions for the magazine section of our website. Along with our rich archive of high-quality newsletter content, we believe that these stories could form a beautiful print prototype of Magma Magazine.
Thanks to this grant, we’re developing a pilot print edition of Magma Magazine. This prototype will be foundational for future issues — which for now we plan to release no more than once a year as end-of-year collections of our best digital work. It will also serve as a tangible product to present at events and talks, helping us connect with new audiences and deepen engagement with our community around the themes at the heart of our project.
