Evaluation and granting
Evaluation is carried out by an independent and anonymous jury that is put together by the Fund on the basis of a list of names proposed by the members of the advisory board of Journalismfund.eu. The jury consists of four members, of which three have thorough journalistic experience and one another relevant background. Two of the four jurors rotate every two years; a juror can sit in the jury for a maximum of four consecutive years.
Each proposal is evaluated separately by the 4 jurors on the basis of the predefined criteria. On the basis of the score obtained by the proposal and depending on the available budget, the juror will also propose which amount should be allocated to each proposal.
The jurors send their assessments to the director of the Fund, who gathers an overview of the individual assessments by the jurors and disseminates it back to them. The jurors then come to a consensus on the allocation of work grants and the distribution of the available budget. A representative of the Fund functions as secretary. In the event that the votes of the 4 jurors are equally split, the chairman of the jury will propose a compromise that must be agreed by all the jurors.
All applicants will be informed in writing of the evaluation. An appointment will be made with the laureates as quickly as possible to clear all details and to get the project underway as quickly as possible.
The grant is paid in two portions, 70 percent of the grant is transferred in advance, the last 30 percent is transferred, when the applicant has finalised the story and submitted to the Journalismfund.eu the outcome of the research (2 copies of articles, books, dvds aswell as information about the relevant internet links) and a short research report of maximum one A4 page aswell as a financial report.
