Rules for application
Journalists who have a good idea for an investigative story and need money for the research can apply.
The story should be of relevance for a European audience, be published in media that reach a broad or highly relevant audience, and the story should be published in at least two EU and/or EFTA countries. Journalists from other parts of Europe or the world can look for grants in their region in our overview of journalism research grants.
The story should have investigative character and bring significant new information to the audience.
All proposals are submitted in writing via the website application form and they are dealt with in writing. Journalismfund.eu will acknowledge receipt of the proposal by e-mail.
Additional documentation and information may be requested by Journalismfund.eu.
Only natural persons are eligible for a work grant.
The applicant(s) must demonstrate convincingly that it would not be possible to realise the project without a work grant. In other words they must explain, why they make the appeal to Journalismfund.eu
Applicants must be working as journalists. Furthermore, references from individuals (editors, publishers, journalists, professors) and/or references to earlier work are essential. Journalismfund.eu reserves the right to contact references (while respecting the confidentiality of the proposal, see below).
The applicant(s) must be able to demonstrate the feasibility of the project. A basic commitment to take on the product on the part of a medium or preferably on the part of several media in two or more European countries is a condition for the award of the work grant requested.
Applications can be turned down on grounds of budget.
The applicant(s) must be prepared to give an explanation of his/her product in person, if required by the Fund or the Jury
Both the Fund and the Jury are bound to strict confidentiality - before, during and after evaluation of proposals.
The grantee agrees on mentioning the Fund when a work grant-dependent journalistic product is published.
Recipients of a work grant undertake to report regularly to the Fund on the progress of the project.
The Fund reserves the right to publish in part, in whole or as a reference the final product on its website or in its publications.
Grantees accept to present reports of their research and to share their experience with colleagues.
January 2010.
