TIRANA – Albania is experiencing an unprecedented tourism surge, with over 7.5 million tourists last year, and expecting more than 10 million next year. This rapid growth is putting significant pressure on the country’s natural environment.

During their fieldwork, the team of journalists travelled from inland to the coast, visiting Tirana, Librazhd, Pogradec, and Lin, and then Himara and Vlora, to understand whether these numbers are real and how much propaganda has impacted the tourism boom. They analysed overtourism effects and visible consequences, particularly with regards to ecosystem protection, but also the impact on the lives of Albanian people.
