Many actors in the media sector are facing problems because of the measures taken by the Belgian National Security Council to limit the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19. On 2 June 2020, the Flemish Government made a final decision on the amount of emergency funds to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, including a project support to Journalismfund.eu (via the Pascal Decroos Fund project), for local projects of freelance journalists who can rely on few other support measures.

The Fund aims to promote quality journalism in Flanders by giving both starters and more experienced journalists the opportunity to carry out an in-depth journalistic project. In principle, this is a project that cannot be realised in regular journalism, that has great newsworthiness and depth and that is at the same time original, innovative and time-consuming.
