OGONILAND - This investigation exposed the negative effects of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria – a subsidiary of Shell Plc, oil pipeline pollution in Ogoniland in the Niger Delta, which has resulted in the loss of several aquatic species and the deterioration of the ecosystem.
The report revealed that the British Shell pipeline leaked and spilled a total of 16,000 barrels of oil only on 25 August 2022 that affected an area of 3900 meters in Bodo Community in Southern Nigeria, and since the pollution, the victims have not yet received compensation.
Despite Shell's claim that it has contributed $572 million to the Ogoni Trust Fund spanning five years from 2018 to 2022 respectively, the journalists' findings revealed that some of the basic life sustainability as recommended by UNEP Report, like the provision of borehole water are on snail’s speed, the provision of Integrated Contaminated Soil Management Centre, to be built in Ogoniland and supported by potentially hundreds of mini treatment centres, are still unmet.
Scientific analysis of soil, drinking water and river from the Bodo community where the oil spill occurred on 25 August 2022, shows a high concentration of hydrocarbons.
