Deana Mrkaja is a freelance journalist based in Berlin, Germany.

As a journalist, she investigates economic and environmental crime, human rights abuses and democracy. Her work is published as reports, radio features and podcasts, texts and social media content. Her research has been funded by Journalismfund Europe, Netzwerk Recherche, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and Investigative Journalism for Europe, among others. Her work has won several awards: Ernst Schneider Award 2018 (category innovation/entertainment programme), Science Journalist of the Year Medium Magazine 2017 (7th place), nominated for the German Reporter Award 2017 (category multimedia). She also trains German and international journalists in (video) storytelling, social media and online journalism, often people who have had to leave their home countries due to repression and lack of press freedom.

As a futurologist, she has contributed to major studies, including for the ETH Zurich, held futures workshops for the UN's 'Share the Meal' programme, and lectured on 'Democracy of the Future'.
