Trade Union of Journalists & Media Workers defends workers' rights and freedom of the press of the journalists and media workers in North Macedonia.

The Independent Trade Union of Journalists and Media Workers (SSNM) was established in 2010 in Macedonia as a trade union that assembles all workers employed in the various fields of media in the country.

SSNM is committed to improving the working conditions and reinforcing the labour rights of journalists and media workers in the country, to fight against censorship and to promote free access to information and sources. It is an important factor in our society and works relentlessly to provide clarity and transparency where there is injustice, signalizing all irregularities that occur in the media.

SSNM is a full member of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the world's largest organisation of journalists, representing 600,000 media professionals from 187 trade unions and associations in more than 140 countries as well as the European Federation of Journalists.

Its main activities include:

  1. Advocacy for collective bargaining and collective agreements
  2. Free legal aid for labour rights for members
  3. Protection of journalists and media workers from threats and pressures
  4. Advocacy for safety of journalists and media workers
  5. Cooperation with national and international trade unions and related organizations and institutions
  6. Cooperation with state institutions and media owners
  7. Labour rights educational workshops for journalists and media workers

SKOPJE – Local journalists have a unique role to play in changing the narrative around the world's environmental breakdown and becoming an essential part of the solution. The Independent Trade Union of Journalists and Media Workers organised a several months-long training to equip journalists with skills and tools to carry the duty to communicate verified, impartial, and accurate messages of public importance in regard to climate change and the environmental issues.
