MADISON, WI - A new study describes how US-American foundations support media projects and new business models for journalism in order to secure a vibrant media landscape and well investigated, high-quality news.

The study of the Technical University of Dortmund and the University of Wisconsin-Madison represents a starting point for discussion of the development and trial of nonprofit-funded new business models for high quality journalism in Germany.

The Technical University of Dortmund (Germany) commissioned a survey of foundation-backed journalism in the USA to serve as a starting point for dicsussion of the development and trial of new models for nonprofit-funded quality journalims in Germany.

The report "The Field of Nonprofit Funding of Journalism in the United States" provides an overview of media projects supported by US-American foundations and describes how vibrant, nonprofit-funded journalism has come about in the USA in the last ten years.

The autor of the report, Prof. Lewis Friedland, is Director of the Center for Communication and Democracy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Active Philanthropy was responsible for editing and coordination.

German organisation Active Philantropy also participated in presenting the study and provides a list of payments by grant focused on investigative journalism since 2005.

TAMPERE - A study into online journalistic start-ups and their business models conducted as a joint project of three universities was published recently. By looking at 69 case studies, it analyses the online journalism landscape in nine countries and gives recommendations to media entrepreneurs on how to build a sustainable online platform.
