BAHIR DAR - For the past 19 months, Ethiopia’s Amhara region has been devastated by a conflict between federal forces and the Fano militia, which seeks full control of Amhara territory.

The Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) have been accused of severe human rights abuses, including indiscriminate drone strikes that have killed thousands of civilians.

Fano, seen by many as a protector of the Amhara people, continues to resist federal forces. Humanitarian aid has been severely disrupted, with several aid workers killed. Fano, emerging from the 2016-2018 protests, is fighting to end the perceived "oppression" of the Amhara. The conflict has caused a humanitarian crisis in the region. While Fano grows, the situation remains unresolved and an end to the conflict is not in sight.
