How to produce journalism that brings communities closer together in Belgium
Belgium is harder to cover than it looks. A divided media landscape. Communities that rarely read each other's press. Stories that get told incompletely — or not at all. The result is a country where too much journalism stops at borders they should be crossing.
This is an evening for those who think that's a problem worth solving.
Inspired by the Belgian Bridge grant programme from Journalismfund Europe, we’re bringing together reporters, editors, and investigators to dig into what it actually takes to produce journalism that travels — across languages, communities, and the assumptions we bring to our beat.
How do you build a investigation that holds up in more than one newsroom? Where are the stories that fall through the cracks of a divided media landscape? And who isn't being covered — and why?
Three journalists who have asked these questions take the stage:
- Béatrice Delvaux — Editorial Director, Le Soir
- Karel Verhoeven — Editor-in-Chief, De Standaard & De Standaard en français
- Karl Van den Broeck — Founder & Editor-in-chief, Apache
Moderated by Débora Votquenne Journalist, VRT & VVOJ
Together, they'll reflect on what divides us, what unites us, and how journalism can be the bridge.
But this evening isn't just about listening — it's about connecting. Whether you're already looking for a partner for your next investigation or simply curious about cross-community journalism, this is your chance to meet like-minded journalists from the other side of the language divide.
🗣 The evening will be held in both French and Dutch.
