MADRID - This project is aimed at Madrid’s migrant communities with a particular focus on migrant women. Migrant voices remain underrepresented in the media, creating a gap between their informational needs and the narratives being produced about migration.

This not only affects migrant communities but also limits broader society’s access to diverse and accurate information.

The objective of this project is to implement a participatory methodology that places Madrid’s migrant communities at the center of journalism. Migrant voices are often absent from narratives that shape public discourse, creating a disconnect between their lived experiences and the stories being told. This initiative will empower migrants to co-create information and narratives that reflect their realities.

PorCausa’s team intends to utilize the funding to consolidate and implement this methodology for the first time. This will involve establishing contact and relationships with community organizations, carrying out discussion groups and coordinating work with participants and community actors throughout the investigative process. As a pilot, we will explore migration, gender, and mental health through a four-phase collaborative process, where participants lead investigations and shape outcomes.

Unlike traditional approaches, where migrant communities are treated as passive subjects, this project places them in central, active roles in the production of content and information. This approach seeks to foster a co-creation process in which participants directly influence the design, development and diffusion of their own narratives and of information they consider relevant. By creating opportunities for migrants living in Madrid to actively participate in the production of news content, the project ensures that a wider range of perspectives, experiences and topics are covered.

Goals (expected) of the project

The project aims to implement a participatory methodology that actively and equitably engages members of Madrid’s migrant communities in the production of porCausa’s investigative work, recognizing the invaluable knowledge migrants hold about their own lives and contexts.

Through participant involvement at every stage of the investigative process, the project strives to foster the self-representation and autonomy of migrant communities of Madrid while also making possible the production of information that is relevant to the community. In this pilot phase, we will apply this methodology to explore the intersection of migration, mental health, and gender—placing migrant women at the heart of the process as co-creators of knowledge and new narratives around migration.

Beyond the production of content, the project aims to strengthen community bonds, fostering connections between participants, journalists, and researchers. This network will create a supportive environment that nurtures collective action and drives meaningful change.
