The proposal includes two three-day journalism workshops for adult inmates and individuals involved in diversion programmes. Their contributions will form the basis of a dedicated column in lavialibera magazine.
The project aims to break the silence surrounding prisons by enabling those inside to become narrators of their own realities. In a space where journalists rarely enter and news seldom emerges, the project seeks to amplify unheard voices—offering insights and narratives from a world often ignored and stigmatised. The goal is to restore dignity and provide the public with an alternative, human-centred perspective on incarceration.
lavialibera is a paper magazine committed to in-depth, slow journalism. It is complemented by a regularly updated news website and original content designed for social media and younger audiences. The publication’s mission is to foster an informed civil society by building active, inclusive communities and addressing information gaps on key issues such as organised crime, corruption, migration, youth, the environment, and social movements.
Goals (Expected) of the Project
The project seeks to:
- Reduce the distance between life inside and outside prison walls;
- Challenge the stigma surrounding incarceration;
- Break the silence and give voice to one of society’s most marginalised spaces.
The project addresses the significant lack of news coverage from within prisons, which often leads to harmful stereotypes and misinformation. By offering tailored training, editorial support, and a dedicated column in lavialibera magazine, the project promotes media pluralism, enhances access to public interest journalism, and encourages a more inclusive and nuanced understanding of justice and incarceration.
