'Climate Migration Uncovered: Journalism Workshops on Myths, Narratives, and Visualisation' is a free workshop series with three expert-led sessions to help investigative journalists ethically cover climate migration.

Its participants will learn about relevant laws, debunk common myths, and gain skills for effective reporting to present their findings clearly and compellingly.

Led by inspiring journalists, photographers, and academics, these workshops will help you explore the complexities and nuances surrounding this urgent topic.

Workshop 1:  Unpacking “Climate Migrants” – Myths, Meanings, and Legalities
Tuesday 10 December, 5 to 6.30pm (CET)
Join us for an engaging workshop that delves into the complexities of “climate migrants,” a term that frequently appears in public discourse but is often misunderstood. This session will provide valuable insights into climate-induced migration through exploring key legal concepts, terminologies and debunking prevalent myths. The session will be led by experts, including Dr. David Durand-Delacre Senior Researcher at the Institute for Environment and Human Security at United Nations University, along with other speakers to be confirmed. They will help journalists unpack the complexities of  climate migration, and develop an understanding of the foundational concepts that link climate change and migration. Award-winning journalist Ismail Einashe will moderate the session.

Workshop 2: Ethical Reporting on Climate Migrants – Navigating Challenges and Nuances
Wednesday 11 December, 5 to 6.30pm (CET)
Join us for a workshop focused on the intersection of climate change and migration, specifically examining how journalists can effectively cover these pressing issues. Our discussion will bring together journalists who have experience in covering this challenging beat, including Abdi Latif Dahir, the East Africa Correspondent for The New York Times, Rosa Meneses, the former Middle East and North Africa Editor of El Mundo, and Elli Zotou, an award-winning freelance journalist.

The phrase “climate migrants” often conjures images of rapid, large-scale population shifts from developing nations to more affluent ones driven by climate pressures. Our discussion will explore this complex issue amid escalating climate crises and offer journalists strategies to avoid sensationalism while accurately and ethically reporting on the realities of climate migration. Award-winning journalist Ismail Einashe will moderate the session.

Workshop 3Visualising Migration and Climate Change

Thursday 12 December, 5 to 6.30pm (CET)
In this dynamic workshop we will explore the challenge of creating images that accurately and humanely illustrate migration and climate change stories. Images often depict narrow visual frames and tropes such as scenes of disaster, people crossing borders or arriving in boats, which do not adequately capture the experiences of climate change migrants. The workshop features insights from acclaimed photographers and picture editors, including Kate Stanworth, along with other speakers to be confirmed. The primary goal of the workshop is to empower photo-journalists and anyone involved in commissioning photography, equipping them to approach topics like climate change and migration with informed empathy. Award-winning journalist Ismail Einashe will moderate the session.

*This workshop series is taking place in the framework of Professional Development for Environmental Journalism grant programme.*
