Prof Ludo Abicht (°1936) is a Belgian classicist, philosopher and doctor of Germanic philology
He obtained his doctorate with a dissertation on the Prague Jewish-German writer Paul Adler. He has written many books on Judaism. He has taught literature and philosophy in the USA and Canada, as well as at the University of Antwerp and the Hogeschool Antwerpen.
Abicht grew up in Antwerp, Belgium. He attended the Xavier College in Borgerhout and joined the Jesuits in 1954. He went on to study philosophy and linguistics. He dropped out in 1961. In 1971, Abicht received a doctorate in Germanic literature from the University of Cincinnati. He then taught for 30 years. He also published 21 books and several articles. Abicht held the Calewaert Chair in 2004-2005 and was a member of the Bossuyt Commission on Norms and Values in 2005-2006.
He is active in the Vlaamse Beweging (Flemish Movement) and in Meervoud, is godfather of the Comité Vlaanderen Onafhankelijk, publishes in Doorbraak of the Vlaamse Volksbeweging and is one of the authors of the manifesto of the Gravensteen group. Abicht was also one of the signatories of the 2006 Spring Manifesto.
Abicht was awarded the Order of the Flemish Lion in 1998. In 2001, he received the Arthur Cornette Prize for Intelligent emotion and the Ark Prize of the Free Word.
Abicht is a committed member of a Masonic lodge under the Belgian Federation of Le Droit Humain.
