Matei Bărbulescu is an investigative journalist from Romania who is based in Bucharest.
Matei explores the intersection of power, society and psychology in shaping people’s lives. He has investigated topics such as human trafficking, cults, serial rapists, pyramid schemes, industrial agriculture, corruption, poverty, homelessness, mental health, addiction, migration, the dark web, protests and conspiracies. His reporting combines personal narratives with investigations into the systems that enable corruption and inequality.
Over the past eleven years, he has collaborated with major outlets including The New York Times, SBS Australia/Dateline, Channel 4 News, Sky News Italia and Politico Europe, as well as the investigative journalism collective Lighthouse Reports.
