Miguel Velasco Almendral is a journalist and photojournalist from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands.

His professional work is primarily devoted to the study and documentation of migration processes from Africa to the Canary Islands, complemented by research on broader social phenomena, including environmental journalism. Since relocating to the archipelago in 2020, he has systematically focused on examining and making visible the complexities of the Canary migration route, while compiling first-hand testimonies of those undertaking the Atlantic crossing.

His reporting has been published by El País, with which he has maintained an ongoing collaboration since 2020. He has also contributed to eldiario.es and Público, and in 2024 he worked with the NGO The New Humanitarian on a dedicated project. Across these collaborations, his work has consistently addressed migration, environmental challenges, and social dynamics in a manner that combines rigorous documentation with a strong commitment to public interest journalism.

Since establishing himself in the Canary Islands, Miguel has acquired extensive expertise in documenting the diverse circumstances affecting the territory. His work explores the intersections of migration, social concerns, and cultural issues, adopting a proximity-based approach that ensures both depth of analysis and sensitivity to local contexts. Through this perspective, he contributes to fostering awareness and critical understanding of issues that carry relevance at local and national levels.
