BRATISLAVA - Investigative center of Jan Kuciak in Slovakia has launched training programme to increase the capacity of Slovak journalists in environmental investigations.

At least 10 journalists will be trained in enhanced investigative techniques that will help them to uncover harm to the nature, perpetrators and their motivations.
Slovakia is a country of many natural wonders. Previous government planned to invest heavily in its protection and to increase natural protected areas.

After the government change in autumn 2023 many of the proposed policies towards higher environmental protection had been revised or completely revoked. Many changes to the environmental legislature had been adopted, protected brown bears allowed to be hunted, and in general protection of the environment has decreased. There is a pressing need to increase the number of environmental investigations around the country.

As a part of the project 3 selected journalists, based on the best project's pitches will work on concrete investigative stories with the help of mentor and conduct complex environmental investigations.

  • June 2026 - 1 day training
  • July 2026 - selection of the best pitches
  • August - November 2026 - work on investigative project under the supervision of the mentor and publication

Trainers/mentors/speakers:

  • Lukas Diko (ICJK)
  • Karin Kőváry Sólymos (ICJK)
