A total of 42 journalists from 23 different countries applied for a grant during the first application round of Journalismfund.eu’s Connecting Continents grant programme. The second round is open now and ends on August 17th.

Connecting Continents is a new research grant programme by Journalismfund.eu in collaboration with Oxfam Novib, which provides the money for the grants. The programme is aimed at encouraging cross-border collaborations between Sub-Saharan African and European investigative journalists. It was launched on Saturday May 9th.

Numbers

The first application round closed on June 8th. By the deadline, 12 applications had been submitted by a total of 42 journalists from 23 different countries. Of those 42 applicants, 33 are men and 9 women, and 24 are European while 18 are African. The Netherlands is the best-represented country with 8 journalists who applied, followed by Belgium (5) and Nigeria, Italy and Portugal (3). Uganda and Mozambique both had two journalists apply.

More than half of the applicants (24) are a member of a professional journalist association.  21 applicants work as freelancers.

Grants

During its meeting on July 2nd, the jury approved three applications of the twelve received. One additional application was allocated a small grant as seed money for initial research. €50,000 has been allocated in this round, leaving another €50,000 for the next.
