PARIS - Journalists Taina Tervonen and Fabien Perrier, who received grants from Journalismfund Europe's European Cross-border Grants programme, will present their investigative project, Criminal Captains, on stage at Mediavivant.
Their investigative project focused on asylum seekers who are being charged with human trafficking and homicide even though the actual organiser of the crossing was never on the boat and was never charged.
A young Syrian, who received a free journey, drove a boat carrying migrants from Turkey to Italy that capsized near the Greek island of Syros where 18 passengers died. The Syrian asylum seeker, Abdalla Jaloul, was convicted to 187 years in prison.
