BRUSSELS - There are several grants or fellowships for journalists that have a deadline coming up. We thought it was worth mentioning a few of them before it's too late to submit an application.

Deadline 31 January: Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism's Journalism Fellowship Programme 2014-15. For mid-career journalists from all over the world with a miminum of five years' experience.

Deadline 14 February: Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting's Persephone Miel Fellowship 2014. Travel grant of $5000 for a reporting project on topics and regions of global importance, with an emphasis on issues that have gone unreported or under-reported in the mainstream media.

Deadline 26 February: EJC's Journalism Grants. Projects of great impact and high visibility that combine critical thinking with good fact checking.

Deadline 5 March: BIRN's Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence. For experienced journalists from the Balkans. This year's theme is 'generations'.

Deadline 10 March: Journalismfund.eu's cross-border research grants. Supporting professional journalists who have good ideas for cross-border research and for research on European affairs. The stories must be relevant for European target groups.

Several photography grants: Fotografia Magazine compiled a list of grants, funds and fellowships for photographers this year.

New research grants for journalists in Africa

ACCRA – Numerous African reporters have contacted Journalismfund.eu for funding. Now new research grants are made available for four Western African countries. Recent examples show that African reporters very much are interested in the same subjects for cross-border research as European ones.

SKOPJE - Two Macedonian journalists supported with a work grant by the Danish Scoop project were awarded a national journalism price for a story on piracy in their country.
