PARIS – The French team behind Green to Grey, a large cross-border investigation supported by Journalismfund Europe, has won the Environment and Climate category of the Louise Weiss European Journalism Award.

Journalists Raphaëlle Aubert, Romain Imbach and Elsa Delmas of Le Monde were recognised for their publication Artificialisation: Comment l’Europe vire du vert au gris.

Green to Grey examined the rapid expansion of artificialised land and its consequences for the continent’s efforts to protect agricultural land, biodiversity and natural ecosystems. The journalists showed that Europe loses 1,500 km² to construction annually – equivalent to 600 football pitches destroyed every day.

The award is the fourth recognition for the Green to Grey investigation, which brought together journalists from several European countries to examine how land use is changing across the continent.
