BERLIN - The German think tank Friedrich Ebert Stiftung - traditionally close to the German socialdemocratic party - has made a useful overview (PDF) over support models for quality journalism. The overview is part of a larger analysis of international media trends.

The report by Friedrich Ebert Stiftung FES gives an updated and very useful overview over direct and indirect media support in the various European countries (se table 1 on page 52 of the report).

But FES also selects a number of support models for quality journalism in the context of journalism playing the necessary role of a watchdog in democratic societies.

Journalismfund.eu is not among the mentioned projects yet. But Journalismfund.eu is modelled over the research grants by the Pascal Decroos Fond in Belgium and the Scoop project on the Balkans, the Ukraine and the Caucasus (read chapter 4 from page 63 of the report and see overview table 3 from page 71).

Please note, however, that the Fonds Pascal Decroos in 2008 distributed € 125.000 (not as mentioned in the report 33.000), that the Scoop project is funded by the Danish government (not as mentioned in the report by the EU neighbourhood programme), and that the Scoop projects does provide grants in the Ukraine, but not in Bulgaria.
