ROME - A years-long investigation led to greater oversight of practices in the psychiatric sector in Italy. Two projects, "The Business of Madness" and "Madness Companies", focused on abusive practices in institutions and the way private investment took over companies as a means to generate profit.

As previously highlighted, the Ludovica Jona Lasinio, a grantee of the European Local Cross-border grant programme, spoke at the Human Rights Italian Parliamentary Commission in 2025 to discuss her findings as a follow-up of the team's investigative project The Business of Madness.

Most recently, a senator from the Italian opposition Democratic Party, took up the issue and successfully secured an amendment to the finance bill passed at the end of 2025. This amendment allocated €200,000 for national and regional authorities to monitor the use of mechanical restraints, while also making this provision mandatory.
