BRUSSELS – 31 projects were submitted for our second application round of 2014. An increasing number of applicants from countries that tended to be underrepresented in the past are starting to find their way to the organisation.

The second Journalismfund.eu cross-border grant application round was closed on Monday 15 September. The deadline coincided with that of our first ever special grants application call for projects focusing on EU funding. The applications have been processed and forwarded to the jury. Here is an overview of the statistics.

More women than men

There were 31 applications for both application calls combined. In total, 83 people applied either as a main or an additional applicant, making an average of 2.7 people per team of applicants. More women than men submitted an application: 47 versus 36. It is only the third time since the start of our cross-border working grant programme that that is the case. (The previous two were our June 2010 and our January 2012 calls.)

From Cyprus to Estonia

Applications came in from all over Europe. We are thrilled to see that we are reaching more and more journalists from countries that had few or no applicants in previous application rounds: Portugal (3), Estonia (2), Finland (2), Macedonia (2) and Serbia (2). Another thing to celebrate is that we have our first ever Cypriot (and second ever Czech) applicant. The spreading of both calls to all corners of the continent was helped by our recently refurbished International Advisory Board.

Most applying journalists are still from Italy (13), followed by the Netherlands and Spain (both 8). A surprise among the top applicant countries is Austria (6); Germany (5) traditionally has quite a few applicants as well. Find a few maps with our applicants statistics at journalismfund.eu/maps.

For our September 2014 round we have a total of €50,000 to distribute, €30,000 for the regular cross-border working grants and €20,000 for the special call working grants on EU funding. The jury meeting is planned in October. Applicants can expect a decision in the second half of October or early November.

Deadlines for European cross-border, Connecting Continents and FoX working grants

2015-06-30

There are two important deadlines for three different cross-border working grant programmes this summer. August 17th for the intercontinental Connecting Continents working grant, and September 15th for the European cross-border grants and for the FoX Freedom of Expression working grants.

Call for proposals with new options

2010-04-17

BRUSSELS – Journalismfund.eu now can distribute another round of research grants. If journalists have a good idea for an investigative story but lack time or money to carry out the research, they can apply for funding. As a new option this call not only offers support for cross-border stories but also for European affairs stories.

Jury member goes public: Hans-Martin Tillack
