As part of the project, the team sought to engage the local community and local leaders in creating content, with particular emphasis on underrepresented communities. They anticipated a minimum of 250 direct interactions with residents on the information platform during the project period, and that at least 25% of the content on the platform would be created in cooperation with Readers.

Goals (expected) of the project

The goal of the Project was to permanently eliminate the information desert in the so-called rural eastern Łódź district, where approximately 100,000 residents were excluded from access to information. There were no independent local media in this area, and local government and state titles served only as sources of propaganda, posing a threat to pluralism and local democracy.

What is the impact?

The project led to significant growth for the media outlet, with the new section dedicated to the eastern Łódź district becoming a permanent and strategic part of the website. What began as an experimental initiative evolved into a fully integrated element of the editorial structure, highlighting its relevance and long-term value. The project enabled the outlet to establish a presence in an area that had previously lacked regular, independent reporting and effectively functioned as a news desert. As a result, the organisation committed to further developing the section and strengthening its role in local coverage.

The project also addressed long-standing challenges in recruiting a locally based journalist capable of delivering consistent, high-quality hyperlocal reporting. Renewed recruitment efforts, supported by project resources, generated strong interest and high-quality applications, confirming the demand for reliable public-interest journalism in the area. Importantly, the new position was expected to be financially sustained through programmatic and local advertising, creating a stable long-term model. The initiative fundamentally reshaped the outlet’s approach to serving underserved communities and demonstrated the lasting impact of community-focused journalism.
