JOHANNESBURG - South Africa attracts a large number of migrants and refugees from across the African continent. However, the country lacks the institutions required to manage or accommodate this steady influx.

At the beginning of 2006, there was a backlog of 135,000 asylum applications. Anyone ending up in a detention centre has reason to fear for their life. Every year, hundreds of asylum seekers and migrants die as a result of human rights violations or a lack of medical care.

Zimbabwean journalist Zakeus Chibaya immersed himself in the uncertain and shadowy world of an emerging global power. It was a harsh experience.
