HRASTNIK – Our project introduces a new “editorial comments” section on our website, offering behind-the-scenes insights into how and why we report certain stories, with real examples from our daily work.

By addressing criticism transparently and engaging directly with younger, skeptical audiences, we aim to rebuild trust, foster media literacy, and show the human side of journalism. This initiative will strengthen our relationship with the community, attract new readers, and reinforce our role as a credible and relatable regional news source.

It’s time for us to transfer what’s in our heads onto paper.
But isn’t that what journalists already do, you might ask? Sure — but this will be something a bit different.
As regional journalists, we’re out on the streets every day, talking to people, following reactions on social media, and listening to what’s being said — not just about the news, but also about us. People often ask what’s really going on behind the headlines, or even accuse us of twisting the truth — especially in tense times like during the pandemic.

The truth is: journalism isn’t always black and white. Sometimes we have to shorten things, skip certain details, or choose just one angle out of many. But that doesn’t mean the rest isn’t important — just that it might not fit the format. So we’re launching something new.

We’re creating a space on our website for editorial comments — a behind-the-scenes look at how we work and what we experience. Through real-life stories, we’ll explain the choices we make, the challenges we face, and how it really feels to be in our shoes.

Why? Because journalism today is under fire. Everyone’s a critic, especially on social media — and often the loudest voices don’t read the full story. Some take issue with the topic, others with the tone. Some even go after us personally.
We believe this is one way to rebuild trust, show our work more openly, and maybe win back some of those who’ve tuned out — tired of all the noise and looking for something real.

Goals of the project

  • We will create a new section on our website, clearly visible on the homepage. It will be easy to use, visually appealing, and all articles will be accessible with one click. In the first year, we’ll highlight it to attract more attention.
  • We’ll promote the new section on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. We'll also print a QR code and distribute it in public spaces.
  • Our editorial team will record short videos explaining why we’re launching this section. The content will be engaging, creative, and a bit humorous – even for those who might not usually follow serious news.
  • We'll start with two articles from behind-the-scenes moments in our daily work. At first, we’ll publish monthly, with the goal of switching to weekly in about a year.
  • Before launching, we’ll run a survey to find out what people know about how we work, if they learned anything new, and what (if anything) surprised them.
