Why did Nyugat decide to focus on this project?
Nyugat focused on this audience-research tool to satisfy the need for a deeper understanding of its audience. In turn, this understanding will help ensure the long-term sustainability of the group’s independent journalism. Unlike traditional surveys, Nyugat’s article-integrated audience-research tool is significantly more organic and user-friendly, encouraging better participation and, thus, better results.
How did applying design-thinking principles help?
Nyugat's design-thinking process resulted in an “empathy-driven process.” The team began with small internal experiments, gathering feedback and continuously adjusting the timing, language, and presentation of the question. In turn, this enabled a solution that was both effective and respectful of the reading experience.
Did Nyugat’s approach change engagement with its audience in any way?
Nyugat’s team saw a significant increase in participation and trust as a result of their approach. More than 16,500 users responded voluntarily to the article-integrated surveys in a month. In effect, the question became a form of “silent dialogue” with their readers.
What challenges did Nyugat encounter and how did it address them?
The key challenge Nyugat faced was the balance between engagement and limiting the intrusiveness of the article-embedded questions. However, through strenuous testing and fine-tuning, the team was able to overcome this issue.
Furthermore, technical challenges emerged, particularly in integrating the system into their content management system. This obstacle was addressed through close collaboration between editors and developers.
How was Nyugat’s project received by its audience?
Readers reacted positively to the project. They appreciated the subtle anonymous-participation mechanism. Nyugat recorded no backlash and fatigue, and observed users engaging repeatedly.
What insights or lessons did Nyugat gain from this project?
Nyugat recognised that well-placed questions outperform traditional surveys. Particularly when users “feel respected” and “the purpose is clear.” Ultimately, this enables audience research to be seamlessly integrated into content without compromising the user experience.
What does Nyugat plan on doing next?
Nyugat plans to continue using its tool to support editorial decisions and community engagement. The group wants to continue developing the project. Through further evaluations, they plan to divide respondents into groups based on their interests and willingness to support the projects. Those categorised as highly willing to help will receive a message containing a personalised support offer embedded in the article they are reading.
What advice would Nyugat give to other journalists or organisations considering a similar path?
Nyugat advises starting small, iterating quickly, and respecting your readers’ time. Feedback mechanisms should be embedded where the audience already is. Finally, transparency, thoughtful design, and low friction are vital to cultivating trust and acquiring meaningful data.
