BRUSSELS - Around 50,000 people are currently homeless in our country. We know they are there, and we seem to have come to terms with their situation. But why, exactly? Why is homelessness so low on the political agenda? Why are we failing to get these people off the streets? Are homeless people no longer human beings?

Journalist Marijn Sillis travelled through the homeless areas of Flanders and Brussels, from Hasselt to Ghent, from railway station to airport, from night shelter to cemetery. For hours on end, he listened to homeless people. He heard their stories with growing anger and indignation and felt their powerlessness. He saw what inequality does to people, what a housing crisis really means, and how traumatising homelessness and life can be.

In Away with the Homeless (Give Them a Home), the author gives a voice to homeless people, in all their forms. Sillis moves from anecdote to systemic failure, ultimately providing you with a comprehensive picture of homelessness today. This book allows you to feel and understand what homelessness really means, for real people.
