LISBON – Primary target audience: local residents in suburban areas of Lisbon, economically vulnerable groups, Afro-descendant communities, and residents of rural parishes.
This project aims to develop a sustainable and scalable distribution network for sharing independent journalistic content with marginalised communities across Portugal.
The network will facilitate regular dissemination activities—such as Q&A sessions with experts, podcast listening sessions, and other formats—in collaboration with partners operating within those communities. These activities will be complemented by a dissemination hub that will serve both as a gateway for new organisations to join the network and as a space to amplify the voices of the target audiences.
The goal is to enhance the dissemination of journalistic content to underserved areas while empowering those whose voices are often unheard to influence this process. Ultimately, the project seeks to promote a more accessible, inclusive, and pluralistic media landscape.
DIVERGENTE is an independent project that publishes content on subjects of public interest that are underrepresented in the media and provides a platform for voices that are usually ignored. At DIVERGENTE, rigour has always been prioritised over speed, embracing a slower and more thoughtful approach to journalism.
The multidisciplinary team brings together journalistic investigation and attention to detail with creativity and innovation. Journalists, designers, programmers, illustrators, and data analysts sit at the same table to discuss what story to tell and how best to tell it, within an environment where artistic creation forms an integral part of the journalistic process.
Goals (Expected) of the Project
The project aims to address the lack of engagement with, and interest in, journalism among marginalised groups, as well as their sense of exclusion—both of which stem from the lack of pluralism in the media. The objectives are to:
- Bring marginalised voices into journalism;
- Create a network of initiatives that combine traditional formats (such as in-person events, to foster genuine engagement and impact) with digital resources and open-source tools (to enable wider reach);
- Build a foundation for scalability to support stakeholders interested in alternative distribution models or addressing news deserts;
- Establish a new source of revenue.
