ABUJA / KADUNA - This investigation examines the operations of two UK-Turkish mining companies, Zeberced and Istanbul Quarry & Concrete, in Nigeria.

Based on extensive interviews, site visits, public records, and desk-based research, it reveals a striking disconnect between the companies’ international financing and political influence, and the serious environmental and health impacts experienced by neighbouring communities.

Key findings:

  • Identification of several apparent breaches of both national legislation and community development agreements, including: blasting carried out within 3 km of residential areas, contravening legal limits and unannounced detonations, leaving residents unprepared and at risk.
  • Failure to fulfil key commitments made under community development agreements, such as the provision of basic amenities, local employment, and improvements to roads.
  • Local communities are suffering significant harm — including respiratory conditions such as asthma and structural damage to their homes — while receiving few of the promised benefits.
