BUCHAREST - EU residents are buying 40% more clothing than a few decades ago, with less than half being collected for reuse and only 1% recycled. The investigation focused on understanding whether the alternatives to fast fashion are sustainable from an economic, social, and environmental perspective.
Besides “traditional” fast fashion chains, there are new ones popping up like Shein or Temu, flooding the European market with poor quality and in many cases unhealthy clothing. Moreover, used clothing sales platforms like Vinted have emerged. The type of platform potentially prolong the life cycle of clothes but may also encourage continued consumption.
In many cases, understanding the alternatives to fast fashion are not 100% viable yet. Therefore, the team would also analyse which solutions– legislative, technological, and consumer-related– are needed.
