KYIV / ONLINE — Internews Ukraine launches "The Green Watch: Environmental Investigative Program", designed to train 20 environmental journalists through a series of nine workshops to address critical ecological issues and help them develop impactful, high-quality materials.

This project is fostering a new generation of skilled journalists equipped to address critical ecological issues exacerbated by conflict. It focuses on exploring the environmental consequences of war, offering participants unique insights into how geopolitical conflicts affect ecological systems across Europe.

After the call for applications for this programme in January 2025, the organising team received 71 applications (the competition was 3,5 people per available spot). To ensure quality selection, the IUA team brought in program mentor Mariana Verbovska and the three IUA experts who have experience working with local media and are immersed in journalism.

As a result of this program, 20 environmental journalists, chosen from the 71 who applied, will take part in 9 online sessions. The practical assignment of the programme will focus on the pollution of the Desna River.

7 sub-grants of 300 euro will be awarded to the top participants for producing in-depth articles on urgent environmental issues (they will also receive mentorship support from the experts for this purpose).

These articles will highlight the environmental challenges Ukraine faces during the war and lay the groundwork for further investigations into the ecological impact of Russia’s invasion.

This initiative represents a significant step toward raising awareness of war-induced environmental problems and strengthening the role of investigative journalism in addressing them.
