Else Beekman is an independent Dutch journalist who has been based in Spain since 2003.
She studied journalism and communication science at the University of Amsterdam, after which she worked as a freelance journalist for several Dutch-language publications about Spain. She has been the publisher and editor of the news platforms InSpanje.nl (since 2011) and InSpain.news (since 2021), which provide Dutch- and English-speaking audiences with insights into Spanish current affairs, society, and culture.
Recently, her growing concern about environmental, political and social challenges in Spain has led her to focus on these issues, as well as the consequences of short-term policymaking for citizens' long-term interests and its effect on people's everyday lives. Her participation in the current Journalismfund Europe cross-border project, 'Is Europe running out of water?', aligns with her growing interest in the issues facing Spain and the governance behind them.
