Johanna Tirnthal is a radio documentary and podcast maker based in Berlin. Originally from Vienna, she studied history, film and cultural theory in Berlin.
As a freelance author, director and editor, she produces long-form radio documentaries and narrative podcasts for Deutschlandfunk, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, WDR and ORF. She is also a co-founder of the collective Audiokombinat.
Tirnthal is currently involved in developing community radio structures in eastern Germany. Her radio documentary "Transit Marseille" was selected for the 2021 International Feature Conference and nominated for the 2021 Franco-German Journalism Prize. Together with Timo Stukenberg, she was awarded the Otto Brenner Research Grant for her investigation into violence against homeless people.
