THE CYCLADES – Tourism in the Greek Cyclades is booming, but at a high cost. This cross-border investigation explores how over-tourism is putting pressure on water supplies, creating waste, and fuelling uncontrolled construction projects across the islands.

The team gained rare access to police files relating to the murder of a surveyor on Mykonos, uncovering links to disputes over luxury real estate. Despite reluctance from politicians and local authorities to speak on camera, the mayors of Mykonos and Santorini shared contrasting views on the future of their islands.

The investigation also reveals how German investors and Greece’s “Strategic Investments” programme are enabling construction in sensitive areas. It also showcases examples of resistance, from grassroots activists on Naxos to Astypalea’s pioneering approach to sustainable tourism.

Key findings

  • Over-tourism in Greece is threatening social structures and ecosystems.
  • Corruption and weak enforcement foster a construction mafia on Mykonos.
  • German investors are pursuing luxury projects despite local opposition.
  • A state-backed investment scheme creates loopholes for hotel construction in protected zones.
  • Alternatives exist, as seen in Astypalea’s sustainability push and Naxos citizens’ mobilisation.
