CESENATICO – On 23 June 2026, Legambiente invited journalist Alex Giuzio to present his investigation What’s Worthy Of Protection Against Sea-Level Rise at a public conference held at the Museo della Marineria in Cesenatico, held under the patronage of the municipality of Cesenatico in Italy.

The event, "La costa dell'Emilia-Romagna tra fragilità e opportunità" ("The Emilia-Romagna coast between fragility and opportunity"), formed part of Legambiente's annual Goletta Verde tour. Mayor Matteo Gozzoli opened the event by acknowledging that safeguarding the coast is now a central concern for local government, from shoreline defence to the future of seaside tourism. Giuzio's investigation, supported by Journalismfund's Environmental Investigative Journalism grant programme, examined how European municipalities decide which stretches of coast to protect from rising seas, comparing Rimini and Rotterdam, both the subject of significant public investment in coastal defence, with Fairbourne in Wales, a village told it will have to be relocated by 2056.

Legambiente used the findings as a starting point to press for a longer-term, joined-up approach to managing the region's coastline.

"32% of the coast has been eroded, a clear sign of the fragility of our territory."
