UNITED STATES - American Dreams is a journalistic multimedia story by Johannes De Bruycker. The project explores a wide range of philosophical and scientific issues, including the nature of reality, (lucid) dreams and nightmares, consciousness and trauma.

For this project, De Bruycker went to the United States in search of the state of Oneirology or dream research. He spoke to the leading experts there, visited the laboratories at MIT and Harvard but also let shamans and traumatised veterans have their say.
The central question of this project: what functions do dreams and nightmares have and what can collective disasters such as corona or climate change teach us about our nocturnal visions.
