SALÉ - On 27 July, Abdelkader Belliraj was sentenced to life imprisonment by the court in Salé. The Moroccan judicial authorities found that Belliraj had committed six murders in Belgium, smuggled weapons into Morocco, laundered money, and led a terrorist network.

The Belliraj affair spans three decades of relations between the Belgian and Moroccan secret services. As early as the 1980s, Belliraj’s name appeared in communications between the Belgian State Security Service and the Moroccan intelligence service, the DGED.

Following his arrest in 2008, however, cooperation broke down, and the DGED’s Brussels office has been unstaffed for the past six months.

MO* journalist Kristof Clerix spent three months delving into the case with a grant from the Pascal Decroos Fund. He attended the trial in Morocco, examined documents that had never been seen before, and interviewed around thirty insiders.

Conclusion? The Belliraj case is a house of mirrors. Only one man knows the whole truth.
