GHENT - Since Bulgaria, the country with the lowest wages in Europe, joined the Union in 2007, around 15,000 Bulgarians have emigrated every year in search of a better future in the West. However, many end up on the margins of our society, camping in remote locations in and around cities.

Stefan and Niki emigrated. They live in Ghent in a barrack on the De Lijn site, waiting for a job, social support or a home that never comes. To survive, they collect scrap metal, which they sell to a scrap dealer for barely 10 euros a day. When De Lijn wants to build its largest depot on the grounds and demolish the shack, the dream of a dignified existence is further away than ever.

Wil Mathijs paints a portrait of Bulgarian migrants who sought their fortune in Belgium but ended up going from bad to worse.
