BUCHAREST - The EU's focus on achieving energy independence is endangering the environment and the health of its citizens due to the continued exploitation of European uranium resources.

National and local authorities show little respect for health and environmental risks when overseeing uranium mining and the rehabilitation of closed uranium mines.

There is no comprehensive or accurate data or monitoring of the quality of life of people living close to current and former uranium mines. Meanwhile, wild animals live among and feed from ponds containing waste and dump-heaps resulting from these mines. Meanwhile, hundreds of millions of euros have been spent closing uranium mines with little effect.

A cross-border investigation spanning four countries: Romania, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Germany.
