BRUSSELS - Journalismfund Europe announces two new appointments to its Board of Directors: Sylke Gruhnwald and Jean Philip De Tender. At its meeting on Tuesday, 14 April 2026, the Board also elected Jean Philip De Tender as the organisation's new Chair. Together, these appointments strengthen Journalismfund Europe's governance at a time when independent, investigative journalism across Europe faces both significant challenges and new opportunities.

Sylke Gruhnwald returns to the Board with a longstanding commitment to independent journalism and media development. She previously served as Chairwoman of Journalismfund Europe's Board in 2016, and her return brings continuity, institutional knowledge, and a deep understanding of the organisation's mission. Gruhnwald's experience in cross-border journalism and media sustainability makes her a valuable voice as Journalismfund Europe continues to expand its support for investigative reporting across the continent.

Jean Philip De Tender

Jean Philip De Tender joins the Board and has been elected its new Chair, succeeding the previous chairperson. He currently serves as Deputy Director General and Director of Media at the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), where he shapes strategy, fosters innovation, and supports collaboration among public service media organisations. He joined the EBU in 2015 and was appointed Deputy Director General in 2021. Before that, De Tender spent more than 25 years at the Flemish public broadcaster VRT, holding several senior positions including Director of Television and channel manager of Eén. He began his career as a journalist in radio and television. He also serves as president and board member of the Constructive Institute in Denmark. His extensive background in media management, public broadcasting, and strategic development aligns closely with Journalismfund Europe's mission to support independent investigative journalism and promote cross-border collaboration.
