BRUSSELS – During its October 2013 application round Journalismfund.eu received a record number of 51 applications for cross-border projects. Journalists from all over Europe applied.

(Updated)

On 21 October 2013 Journalismfund.eu closed its seventh application round for cross-border investigative journalism projects. With a total of 51 projects being submitted, there were more applications than in any of Journalismfund.eu’s previous application rounds.

The 51 applications had a total of 107 main or additional applicants between them. Gender division was more balanced than was the case in the previous application round in September 2012. More men than women applied: 63 versus 44 (up from 50 versus 27 last year).

The applicants are from 30 different countries, mostly European but some others as well. Of all the journalists who applied, most are from Italy (16). Also well-represented are Germany (13), France and The Netherlands (10) and Spain (7). Romania and Latvia both had four journalists apply or support an application; Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Sweden and the UK each had three. From outside the EU there were applicants from Afghanistan (1), Iran (1), Russia (4), Turkey (2), Ukraine (3) and the USA (2).

The total amount of money asked for this application round is € 433,074.95. Journalismfund.eu has € 50.000 to spend, so the jury will not have an easy time deciding.

The jury meeting is scheduled for November 4th, although a second meeting will probably be necessary considering the high number of applications. Applicants will hear from Journalismfund.eu afterwards, around mid-November.

The deadlines for our calls for cross-border projects for the next three years will be announced later this week.
