MILAN/ROTTERDAM - Many cities in Europe are experimenting with citizen’s assemblies to develop stronger and more inclusive climate policies. But are these experiments effective? The team investigated the value and shortcomings of the assemblies as a climate policies solution.
Citizen’s assemblies are samples of the general population of a city, often selected by lottery, who gather to discuss and advise on important public questions. Environmental activists across Europe are calling on cities to implement them to counter the weight of industry in current climate policy, and many cities are responding.
This investigation looks at how these assemblies have been set up and run in cities in Italy (Milan, Bologna) and the Netherlands (Rotterdam), to understand how and when citizen’s assemblies can provide valuable input to achieve climate goals – and restore people’s trust in local democracy.
